Lower High Potassium in Diabetes Induced Kidney Disease

Diabetes is a complex condition which is progressive by nature. As the disease advances it starts affecting several vital parts of the body like the heart, kidneys and nervous system. The biggest negative effect of diabetes that is uncontrolled is seen on kidneys. Several diabetic patients suffer from kidney failures annually across the world. A research indicates that uncontrolled diabetes is responsible for 90% of the kidney related deaths in the world.

Foods that affect diabetic induced kidney diseases

A diabetic patient’s dietary habit plays a very important role in maintaining their health. There are several types of foods that they need to avoid in their daily diet. They should strictly avoid foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt. Even mineral rich diets are not suitable for a diabetic patient. Foods to avoid:

Too much red meat

Excessive calcium

Excessive potassium

Foods that is hard to digest

A diabetic patient’s food should be rich with fiber. Fiber aids in digestion of food and keeps the renal tract in good health. It also prevents kidney stones from forming. Excessive minerals like calcium and potassium remain in the kidneys for over a period of time and form stones. Kidney stones damage the kidneys and can also cause kidney failure.

Role of potassium in kidney disease

The kidneys are responsible for producing potassium in order to regulate the digestive system. The kidneys already regulate the potassium levels in the body and in process absorb this mineral into the organ. Supplying extra potassium thorugh our daily intake will cause the potassium levels to raise in the body. Kidneys are also responsible for regulating the blood pressure. Since the kidneys are constantly interacting with the blood levels it will absorb the impurities from the blood content. In the process they absorb minerals and bring their levels down in the blood stream. In this entire process of blood supply and purification kidneys have the largest role to play. It is a very hard working organ but at the same time it is fragile and delicate. Especially in people who suffer from diabetes the kidneys are already weak. So they should aim at completely eliminating the potassium from their diets.

Potassium is mostly found in fruits and vegetables that are bright yellow in color. Some of them are ripe mangoes, bananas, pumpkin, squash, marsh mallows, leeks and papaya. Some of the vegetables are yellow cucumbers, avocadoes, pumpkins, and zucchini. The best diet for a diabetic patient is a vegetarian diet and they should eat more of leafy green vegetable, drink prune juice and eat vegetables that are green like string beans, okra, egg plant, tomatoes and salads if possible. They can also eat greens like dill.

Diets for Protein Leak from Kidneys with Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the major causes for protein leak in the kidneys. The protein leaks in the kidneys are excreted through urine. When a urine test reveals that there is protein in it then it indicates a major problem like weakening kidneys. Diabetes also causes high blood sugar levels in the body. When a person is suffering from high sugar levels for a long period of time it impairs the renal filtration system. This causes the albumins or the proteins in the urine.

The leakage of proteins into urine can be prevented and controlled by eating a sensible diet. While most people can eat any kind of food, a diabetic person has to be mindful and watchful of what they are eating. They should be completely aware of the type of foods that they are not supposed to eat. Diabetes is a lifetime condition that has to be managed. There is no cure for this disease. It can only be controlled from progressing further. This can be only done by proper exercise and eating a healthy and nutritious diet.

 Avoid proteins

The digestive system of a diabetic person is not strong enough. A high protein diet should be avoided by such people. The proteins that are digested cannot be processed by the renal filtration system. They need to eat diets that have a rich source of fiber. Fiber can pass through the renal filtration system easily without damaging it. Fiber rich foods like fruits and vegetables are very good for a diabetic person. There is no barrage on what kind of fruits or veggies they should have. Practically all of them suit the diet of a diabetic person.

Avoid salts

It is not possible for most people to completely avoid salts as they provide taste but people with diabetes should reduce the intake of salts. A high salt diet can eventually cause life threatening conditions like diabetic nephropathy. This leads to complete kidney failure. Salt also causes high blood pressure which can further affect the kidneys. Salt digests the proteins and causes leaks in the kidneys as well. Moreover it causes retention in the body. The best way to cut salt intake is to use substitutes like lime juice and other alternative options to add taste to their food.

 Avoid carbohydrates

While some carbohydrates are good for health many of them are not. There are some types of carbohydrates that are found in chocolates and processed foods. These carbs can cause permanent kidney damage. The carbohydrates found in such foods cause the blood sugar levels to rise and promote kidney leaks. Sugars, salts, fats and proteins are difficult to be digested by the kidneys of a diabetic person. They cause stress to the kidneys and it results in weakening them further.

Chronic depression that has been unchecked for a long period of time can have multiple effects on the brain. A recent study conducted by the Yale Institute reveals that constant stress and depression can shrink the brain. An experiment was conducted on rats and it showed that when the rats were stressed over a long period of time it impacted their brain. Even though the experiment was conducted only on rats, it can have the same effects on human brain also. The saddest part is that depression cannot be diagnosed in the beginning. The symptoms become severe only in the advanced stages. By then the size of the brain could have been impacted. The only way to prevent brain shrinkage is to prevent ourselves from conditions like stress and depression.

Why does stress and depression affect the brain?

The most common signs of depression and stress are feeling low, fatigue, lack of energy, lack of interest in anything and a general feeling of hopelessness. Depression is a result of the altered chemicals in the brain. The chemicals in the brain process various signals that it is receiving from the body. When the chemicals and their mixing process are altered, it causes undesirable illnesses in people. Depression is the body’s inability to communicate with the brain properly. That is why we express these physiological symptoms. Mood swings are also caused due to depression.

Lack of oxygen in the brain

When a person is going through stress and depression, there is a lack of blood supply to the brain. Lack of blood supply also causes lack of oxygen supply to the brain. This causes the brain cells to be damaged and shrink in size over a period of time. Lack of oxygen due to depression and stress also causes headaches frequently. When you see that you are frequently getting a headache, check yourself for signs of stress and depression. Both stress and depression are known as the silent killers.

 Symptoms of brain shrinkage

There are no visible symptoms that can tell that your brain is shrinking in size. However, you can look for symptoms of depression and stress that can indicate that it is having an impact on the size of your brain. Doctors also have found a direct link to stress. Depression and shrinking of brain size. The only way the doctors can determine that the size of the brain has shrunk is by measuring the percentage of damaged cells in the brain.

How to prevent shrinking of the brain?

Since depression and stress have an impact on the size of the brain, you’ll need to avoid these conditions. The only way to avoid conditions like stress and depression is to keep a healthy mind set. Exercises like yoga and meditation will help you keep a healthy mind. Eating a healthy diet that benefits the brain is also good. They prevent depression and stress.

High-protein diets may increase risk of kidney disease

High protein diets have been extremely popular n the recent past especially for weight loss. The lesser known fact about high protein diets is that they are harmful for health in the long run.  Several researches about these diets find that they can cause kidney damage. They even have negative effects on the urinal and renal tract of men and women. Protein s essential for our body, but too much of protein can prove to be harmful for our health. They have several side effects that cannot be combated by the body. A human body can only handle a balanced diet.

Effects of high protein diet

High proteins usually contain excessive amounts of calcium as well. The human body needs only small amounts of calcium on a daily basis which can be supplied by mile and other dairy products. Too much calcium in our diet will form kidney and gall bladder stones. These stones are naturally dissolvable by our body. They stay in the kidneys and the gall bladder and eventually become a pain over a period of time. When the stones move, they cause excessive pain and will have to be removed through surgery or laparoscopy.

Effects of protein on our body

Proteins are the building blocks of our body. But these are not the only ingredients that are required by the body. Protein helps to build muscle in the body but they have no other natural health benefits. Though the human body is made up of 50 percent muscle it still needs other vitamins and minerals to survive. A high level of protein is difficult to be digested by the body and circulated. Excessive amount of protein also blocks other vitamins and minerals from being absorbed into the body.  All the cells in the body are busy absorbing proteins and the excess of it is transferred to the kidneys. Kidneys have a limited capacity of excreting the proteins. The residue is stored in the kidneys and they end up forming stones.

Kidney functions in the body

Kidneys are delicate organs. They need high fiber content in our diet to be able to excrete the waste of the body. A high protein diet is not capable of delivering the fibrous content. Proteins also block the appetite in a person which is the main reason for weight loss. High protein with a moderate amount of exercise will help build lean muscle. At the same time it also weakens the kidney functionalities. When the kidney is not able to function efficiently, it stops excreting the waste out of the body.  To maintain healthy kidneys, you need to have a balanced diet that has proteins, minerals, vitamins and fiber.

 How to avoid kidney diseases

Kidneys are the most essential organs of the body and they are as important as the heart. Both the kidneys are essential for a healthy life. Fiber is the main ingredient that the kidney thrives upon. Fiber foods help the kidney to aid in digestion and excretion. Along with fiber one has to consume a lot of water. Water aids the kidneys in functioning properly and also in flushing out toxins and other waste from the body.
